The newly chartered USO of Central Virginia in partnership with the Richmond Airport Authority has signed a lease agreement for a 1,200 square foot space located on the entrance floor level of the main terminal for the sight of a new USO Center. The space is currently vacant and once outfitted it will be able to offer a safe and comfortable atmosphere.

The Center which is planned to begin providing service in spring 2010 will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.   It is anticipated that 2,000-2,500 military personnel and family members will be served each month.

Modeled on the airport centers in Hampton Roads, the new center at Richmond International Airport (RIC) will offer:

Information and Referral -- The link between traveling military members and their families with the local community providing accurate, up-to-date information about the local community. Community welcome packets, local travel brochures, cultural and entertainment event listings, hotel/motel/restaurant locations, and information on community services and programs will be made available.

Family Outreach -- The primary source of emergency assistance for travelers in need of lodging, transportation or food until appropriate military or community services are identified. The center will also offer Military Family Support groups a place to host meetings and activities to better serve and inform the military community. (Partnerships are anticipated with local veteran organizations such as the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Wounded Warrior Chapters to provide information and assistance.)

Quality of Life – A home away from home providing on-site computer services,  food and beverages, library services (books/magazines/newspapers/video games), toiletries, communication and children's needs.

USOHR Throws Holiday Party for Military Families
Mike Granville
USOHR Staff Writer

While the weather outside was gray and cold, the mood inside Rockwell Hall was warm and festive. Holiday music was playing, clowns and other characters were entertaining and Santa was listening to children tell him what they wanted for Christmas.

Santa Clause gets a miitary escort at the USO of Hampton Roads' Annual Holiday PartyEach year the USO of Hampton Roads (USOHR) throws an annual Holiday Party to kick off the holiday season and to honor our military members and their families. The location was Rockwell Hall on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLCFS) and thousands of our honored guests came by to say hello and enjoy some good food, fun and some holiday spirit. Title Sponsor Farm Fresh provided free food and drinks and other sponsors setup “elf stations” where our military guests could visit and get and a little gift or some candy.

The day started out with Michael Marie Taylor singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. USOHR President, Bruce LaLonde, then welcomed the crowd and acted as MC.  He kept the crowd entertained and informed while Commander Mike DeWitt, Executive Officer, JEBLCF and USOHR Chairman of the Board ADM. Hank Giffin thanked our military members for their dedication and sacrifices.

Hank Giffin.Susan Mayo, Vice President, Consumer Affairs and Public Relations, Farm Fresh Supermarkets presented the USO of Hampton Roads a check for $10,000 from Proctor and Gamble and thanked our military for their service. She also spent time with our guests even doing the Electric Slide dance with them!  Next the Miss Chesapeakes did a great holiday melody song and dance. Our DJ kept everyone in a dancing mood and held a Twist contest which was won by our own Libby Kendrick.

The USO Mobile Canteen was also on hand to tape messages to loved ones overseas and there was a special area for military organizations to have their own holiday celebrations and then come out and enjoy the rest of the day with everyone else.

Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport USOHR Center Director Libby Kendrick shows some kids how to dances at the USO of Hampton Roads' Annual Holilday Party. The USOHR staff had a wonderful time and if we had any doubt about our honored military guests they were quickly dismissed as many military families came up to us and thanked us for such a fun event. We would like to thank JEBLCFS for hosting the event and all our volunteers for helping make this year’s Party a great success.

A Wonderful Gift on Veteran's Day
Mary Lee from Southwest Airlines delivers a quilt crafted from recycled Southwest Airline uniforms for use in the USOHR/ASYMCA Lounge in Norfolk International AirportOur center at the Norfolk International Airport received a gift on Veteran's Day. Mary Lee, a Southwest Airline Representative (second from the right), stopped by the center to deliver a quilt. Not just any quilt; a quilt she crafted from recycled Southwest Airline uniforms.

Mary Lee wanted to show her appreciation for the work that USO continues to do and especially for the efforts of the centers’ director, Marie Bauckman and her volunteers.
