USO of Hampton Roads Board Chairman Thanks Volunteers

24 April 2008

Dear USO of Hampton Roads Volunteer,

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your volunteer work with the USO of Hampton Roads. As a volunteer, you know better than most the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make every day to protect our way of life. You also understand the burden and stress that military families endure while a loved one is away from home. You should take pride in the fact that you are helping those who serve and their families.

The USO of Hampton Roads operates nine centers in Southeastern Virginia and our paid staff works incredibly hard in our mission of providing a "touch of home" to those who serve. However, we could never fulfill our mission without the enormous support of volunteers like YOU. On behalf of me, the Board of Directors and the staff,THANK YOU again for making our USO one of the best in the nation.

In addition to our centers that are always in need of volunteers, we also sponsor several special events for our military and families that need your support. These include:

Patriotic Festival at the Virginia Beach Ocean Front (30 May-2 June 2008). This is a Virginia Beach/USO salute to the military. It is a weekend of military displays and great beach concerts.

U.S. Navy Seal Family Day (14 June 2008) at Naval Station Dam Neck. USO of Hampton Roads is sponsoring this event to say thank you to the Navy's Special Forces and their families.

Virginia National Guard Family Day (9 August 2008) at Camp Pendleton. 450 VA Guardsmen will return from deployment and the USO wants to give them a family day celebration they deserve.

Military Appreciation Day at the Norfolk Zoo (5 October 2005). We host a free day at the zoo for military and dependants. There is entertainment and activities for children in addition to all the great exhibits at the zoo.

USO Holiday Party at Naval Base Little Creek (6 December 2008). This is our signature event for the holidays. Free food, Santa, music and USO sponsors have lots of give-a-ways. We expect over 9,000 people will attend.

We could always use more volunteers, so if you have friends interested in helping please bring them along. If you or your friends would like to sign up for an event, please visit our website at USOHR.ORG or call Ruth at (757) 788-4983.

Again, thank you for your volunteerism. You are the lifeblood of the USO.

Warm regards,

Hank Giffin
Chairman, Board of Directors
USO of Hampton Roads Vice Admiral, USN, Retired

Special Day for Special Kids!

The USO of Hampton Roads and Kings Dominion will host the annual “USO-Kings Dominion Day” for special needs children on June 20, 2008.

Each year families from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marines with children who have severe medical conditions (terminally ill, chronically ill, life threatening, or wheel chair bound) are provided free park admission, a group picnic, and special medical services at the park.

The program is designed to provide a respite for the families who due to cost, time, and mostly medical reasons are unable to visit recreation and theme parks. USOHR, Kings Dominion, and the Joint Services EFMP Committee make it possible for them to enjoy a family day together.

This event began over 14 years ago. Each year 20 to 25 families from each branch of the service bring their special needs child for a day they will always remember.

To see if you qualify for this wonderful event call your EFMP Coordinator.

For more information on this program call Eva Granville at 757-788-3878 / 757-289-5917 or email: eva.granville@us.army.mil
