USOHR Participates in United Way Day of Caring at the VA Medical
Hospital in Hampton
VA Medical Center (September 7, 2007)--The USO of Hampton Roads participated in the annual “Day of Caring” through United Way of the Virginia Peninsula by visiting the Veteran's Hospital in Hampton.
The Annual Day of Caring is about neighbor helping neighbor with individuals from local businesses and military installations rolling up their sleeves to help improve conditions or provide services at area non-profit agencies. The agencies rely heavily on the power of Day of Caring volunteers to help accomplish these tasks.
This year a record number of volunteers (95) from Newport News Redevelopment and Housing, NASA at Langley, USS Theodore Roosevelt, and a large group from Ferguson Enterprises showed our hospitalized veterans how much we care about them.
The Day started with one-on-one interaction with the patients in the morning and finished with a picnic in the afternoon with plenty of food and entertainment. Volunteers and veterans alike had a great time!
The USO of Hampton Roads would like thank all the participants who came out and spent their time with our “Heroes”. Special thanks also goes to Joe Lewis and the VA Medical Hospital staff for making this "Day of Caring" the most memorable one to date.
USO of Hampton Roads Opens New Center
The USOHR celebrated the month of September by welcoming Ann Morris (pictured right)who has been busy opening a new Center at the Naval Mobilization Processing Site (NMPS) on Norfolk Naval Base.
The Site is where Naval Reserve Personnel are processed in when called to active duty and is a great place for a new USO Center.
Ann has been busy with over 1,200 visitors already who have been treated to snacks, drinks, movies, video games, and plenty of goodwill. She also passed out tickets to several events off base that have been supplied by local venues for troops that were greatly appreciated by all.
ADM Gary Roughhead, who is taking over as the new Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), stopped by to say hello, talk to the sailors, and see what the Center has to offer.
Ann appreciates all the hard work and dedication of all those who have helped in getting the center into operation and looks forward to many years of great USO times.
